About

Troop #16 History

Troop #16 was established in the fall of 1961. Lauckport United Methodist Church is our sponsor.  The present Scoutmaster, Glenn Miller, took over the Troop on April 22, 1963.  The Assistant Scoutmasters were both boy scouts, and one is an Eagle Scout.  Two of the Troop’s Committee members are Eagle Scouts as well.

Troop #16 is a part of the Allohak Council.  The Council covers Washington and Athens counties in Ohio.  The Council also covers Wood (council office location), Jackson, Wirt, Pleasants, Ritchie, Calhoun, Gilmer, Barbour, Tucker, Randolph, Roane, Doddridge, Harrison, Upshur and Lewis counties in West Virginia.

Troop #16 is one of the most active Troops in the Allohak Council.  This is due to the program that the Scoutmasters put into place many years ago and have continued to expand upon throughout the years.  This activity has paid off in providing “Opportunity” for Learning New Skills, Building Character, Achievement and Advancement  for the Boy Scouts in the Troop.

Every year Troop #16 provides twenty-one days and nights of local camping within the Council and out of Council as well, as follows:

  • Three Troop Weekend Winter Camps each year at Camp Kootaga.
  • One Weekend at Burr Oak Lake in Ohio
  • One full week of summer camp at Camp Kootaga each year.
  • Two Troop weekend Spring and Fall Campouts each year.
  • One Council Camporee each year.
  • One Weekend at Circuit Rider Camporee at Jackson’s Mill, WV.

In addition, Troop #16 always schedules one or more “High Adventure” Trips out of Council each year.  These have included over the years as follows:

  • Nine trips to Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico.  Each trip is a three week excursion.
  • Eleven trips to the Appalachian Trail.  Each trip is a one week excursion.
  • Eight trips to Camp Daniel Boone in Asheville, NC.  Each trip is a one week excursion.
  • Nine trips to Summer Camps at Camps in Ohio, South Carolina, Virginia, Kentucky, and Indiana that are a week long.
  • Four trips to the National Boy Scout Jamboree.  The trip also included points of interest along the East coast.
  • One trip to the World Boy Scout Jamboree in Canada.
  • One trip to the Land Between the Lakes in Kentucky.

Troop #16 also holds a Merit Badge Midway in the first quarter of the year.  This year approximately twenty-five Troops from all across the Allohak Council, and one Troop from the Buckskin Council participated.  Several hundred Merit Badges were earned by the Scouts who participated in the Midway.  Scouts also have the opportunity to earn Merit Badges at summer camp as well.  Due to these opportunities a Scout could potentially earn ten Merit Badges in a years time or more if they are truly motivated.

In addition to all of this, Scouts are also provided with work projects to help earn money for the camps and trips including fishing trips, canoeing trips, skiing, whitewater rafting, and trips to college football games, etc.
