Glenn Miller, Scoutmaster, Biography

April 1965: Received Scouters Training Award.
May 1965: Elected into the Order of the Arrow.
May 1968:  Received Scoutmasters Key.
July 1968:  Scoutmaster of Junior Leaders Training.
1968 – 1992: Served on Council Camping Committee.
February 1972:  Received Wood Badge Beads.
Spring 1972 – 1978: Member of the Training Team to train Adult Leaders in the Blennerhassett District.
October 1973:  Built a Shelter at Camp Kootaga on Baden Powell Campsite.
January 1974: Received Blennerhassett District Award of Merit.
Summer 1974:  Led team to construct the Chapel at Camp Kootaga.
1974-1976: Webelos Den Leader
1974-1979:  Adult Scout Leaders Training Staff for the Blennerhassett District, twice as Scoutmaster
March 1975: Received Silver Beaver Award.
1976: Received National Scout Leader of Distinction Award.
January 1978:  Became Scoutmaster of Troop #17 at South Parkersburg United Methodist Church.

Led Contingents to Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico in 1978, 1981, 1984: (Scout Troop #16 went to Philmont however, Glenn did not go due to surgery.), 1988, 1992: (took boys from other Parkersburg Troops as well as his own Troop), 1995, 1999, 2001:  Taking boys from Harrisville, Bluefield and Athens WV in 1988; Taking eight boys from Quite Dell WV, Three boys from Reno, Ohio, three boys from Waterford, Ohio, one boy from Beverly, Ohio as well as other boys from the Allohak Scout Council (as well as boys from his own Troop).

2005: Glenn took boys from his own Troop and two boys from Spencer, WV. This contingent did more sight seeing than any other group that has gone to Philmont. It must also be mentioned that 38 boys went to Philmont at varying times prior to Scout Troop #16 ever going as a group.

1981: Cleared Dakota Campsite
1982:  Built Shelter at the Dan Beard Campsite
1983: Led a Contingent to the World Boy Scout Jamboree in Kanaskis, Alberta, Canada
1985:  Helped to fix Camp Kootaga’s Pool deck

Led Contingents to the National Boy Scout Jamboree at Fort A. P. Hill in Virginia in 1985, 1993, 1997, and 2001.

January 1986:  Received Scoutmaster of the Year Award from the East Central Region of the Boy Scouts of America; which included 55 counties in West Virginia, 7 counties in Virginia, 2 counties in Maryland, 5counties in Ohio, and 2 counties in Kentucky, nine Scouting Councils in all.

Under Glenn’s guidance, the Troop constructed boat docks at the waterfront at Camp Kootaga seven different times.

1986: Received the Cross & Flame Award from the United Methodist Conference of West Virginia for being a Scoutmaster in a United Methodist Church for more than five years.

1987 and 1994: Glenn was Chairman of the Blennerhassett District Boy Scout Camporees.

In the years 1987, 1990, 1994, 1996, 1998, 2002, 2004, 2006 Glenn took his Troop and others to a week long Summer Camp at Camp Daniel Boone in Canton, North Carolina. While there, he taught Merit Badges in Citizenship in the World and Citizenship in the Nation. A total of 147 boys from all over the United States earned badges from Glenn during the last ten years.

In 1988, Glenn was invited to attend the National Meeting of the Boy Scouts of America in San Diego, California, and was one of the 70 Scoutmasters from throughout the nation involved in producing the BSA Boy Scout Handbook and the BSA Scoutmasters Handbook. These handbooks were printed by the BSA, and became effective in January 1990 and lasted until 2000. Glenn’s name is on the credits page in both handbooks.

1992: Glenn Received the Distinguished Scoutmaster Award.
1996: Received the Distinguished Silver Beaver Award.
2003: Received Scoutmaster of the Year Award from the Blennerhassett Scouting District.

Glenn has been involved with the Circuit Rider Camporee hosted by the United Methodist Men of the West Virginia Methodist Conference since it’s inception at Crossroads Methodist Youth Camp in Wood County, having a station at all but two Camporee’s. Stations have included: First Aid, The History of Lord Baden-Powell, Tree and Plant Identification, Knife, Axe and Saw, Fire Building, and Fire Safety, and Map Symbols. Glenn was also on the board for the last five years.

2004: Overhauled the latrine at Baden Powell Campsite.
2005: Overhauled the latrine at Dan Beard Campsite.

These are only part of Glenn’s activities in Scouting, and do not include many things like taking Scouts to 45 Summer Camps at Camp Kootaga, Ten trips of a week each hiking the Appalachian Trail, A week long Summer Camp at Camp Chief Logan in Southern West Virginia, and one week at Camp Harding in South Carolina.

Scout Troop #16 holds a Merit Badge Midway one Saturday in February and one Saturday in March approximately 100 to 200 Scouts attend from all over the Allohak Council, earning 300 to 350 Merit Badges per year. The 2012 Merit Badge Midway will be the twelfth year Glenn and Scout Troop #16 has hosted the Midway.

Glenn has been twice Chairman of the Methodist Church Administrative Board: At Lauckport UMC from 1970 to 1976, and South Parkersburg UMC from 1999 to  2012.

Twice President of his Church’s Methodist Mens Group: 1968-1970 and 1972 – 1974 at Lauckport UMC.

Chairman of the Council on Ministries: 1968-1970.

Evangelism Committee Chairman: 1965-1968.

Chairman of Pastor and Parrish Committee: 1972-1976.
